Christian Death
Gloomy, blasphemous and controversial, Christian Death is probably the earliest gothic rock band that embodies the image of the stereotypical modern goth portrayed in the media (a.k.a mall Goth). But Eldergoths and Trad goths, we love them regardless right (hee hee)? Pioneers of gothic rock along with Siouxsie, The Cure, Bauhaus, T.S.O.M and the gang, they are ironically, also possible influencers of our guilty pleasure "poseur-goth" bands such as Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson (Is it just me, or could Rozz Williams and Marilyn Manson easily pass as twins? Observe (sorry for bad quality):
While I absolutely love Industrial Music, Christian Death is a beautiful change of pace. I would describe this as "gothic-ambient" if I could come up with any name specifically for their kind of music. Deathrock and post-punk created this eerie, haunting yet intellectual sounding piece of art. Some great songs to start with are Romeo's Distress and Lullaby.
But every band has its downsides right? This band may not be for you if you get bored with slowness and repetition. While I personally enjoy the bone-chilling, mournful whispers of Rozz and Eva O, you may think otherwise if you HAVE to clearly hear the lyrics. I would say on the spectrum of extremity when it comes to gothic rock, these guys fall towards the extreme side, the type of music they play is definitely an acquired taste so if your not used to gothic rock, I would personally start with "poppier" bands such as The Cure or The Birthday Massacre, and once your used to that, move onto Christian Death.
